After placing consistently in the semi-finals and finals since 1952, Germany finally ran away with the Miss Universe title. The closest they got before this was in 1956 with Marina Orschel who was first runner-up to Carol Morris of the USA. Germany had no comment over the news that their delegate, Marlene Schmidt, had won the coveted Miss Universe crown. Rosemarie Frankland of Wales, Marlene's runner-up, goes on to win Miss World 1961.
